The One-Eyed Doe

05. THE ONE-EYED DOE.
A one-eyed doe who pastured free
Fast by the margin of the sea
Took, as the thought, the wise precaution
To keep her blind side next the ocean,
That on the land, with watchful eye,
Approaching danger she might spy.
Ah, fatal trust! a cunning poacher
With deadly weapon came to watch her,
And from the water, in his boat,
The unsuspecting Doe was shot,
Lamenting with her dying breath
The caution that had caused her death.
Let him that thinketh he standeth take heed lest he fall.
