066. HERCULES AND THE WAGGONER. As a Countryman was carelessly driving his waggon along a miry lane, ihis wheels stuck so deep in the clay that the horses came to a standstill. Upon this the man, without making the least effort of his own, began to call upon Hercules to come and help him out of his trouble. But Hercules bade him lay his shoulder to the wheel, assuring him that Heaven only aided those who endeavoured to help themselves.
It is in vain to expect our prayers to be heard, if we do not strive as well as pray. [more info]
