The Fox and Cock in a Tree

007. THE FOX AND COCK IN A TREE.
A Cock to shun a Fox assends a tree
From which more safe retreate, to court him hee
Tells him twixt Beasts and Birds all feuds, are doom'd
In kinde Oblivion, now to be intomb'd,
And that this League does Beasts with Beasts combine
Lambes safely now themselves to Wolves resigne.
Whilst they thus parly'd straight a clamorous pack
Of Hounds, a deer sought with swift speed t' attaque.
If peace urg'd hee, why is that Deer thus prest.
They'r not says Reynard with its fame possest.
The Cock replyes, I'le not my strength forgoe,
If true to day, to morrow 'twill be so.

Moral
Would you live safe: then those reports still gleane,
That doe on truth, as theyr firme basis leane.
