The Fox and the Frog

004. THE FOX AND FROG.
Abandoning her moyst and Spungie Cell
Th' ambitious Frog design'd 'mongst beasts to dwell,
Pretends to Physick, and that each disease
She can with charmes of powerfull arts apease.
Most beasts doe credit her except the Fox
Who with Iust Laughter her imposture mocks,
Sayinge, could her dull Skill so much prevaile
Whose meager Aspect is so leane and pale,
She to reforme her owne defect should try
And not to them her vaine receipts aply.
Experienc'd Docters are declared so
Not from Loud boasts but from their cures we know.
Moral
Like crazy Structures Straight to ruin drop
Pretenses which no reall action prop.

The Quack Frog

155. THE QUACK FROG A Frog emerging from the mud of a swamp, proclaimed to all the world that he was come to cure all diseases. “Here!” he cried; “come and see a doctor, the proprietor of medicines such as man never heard of before; no, not Aesculapius himself, Jove’s court-physician! ”
“And how,” said the Fox, “dare you set up to heal others, who are not able to cure your own limping gait, and blotched and wrinkled skin?”

043. THE FROG AND THE FOX. A frog leaping out of the lake, and taking the advantage of a rising ground, made proclamation to all the beasts of the forest, that he was an able physician, and, for curing all manner of distempers, would turn his back to no person living. This discourse, uttered in a parcel of hard, cramp words, which nobody understood, made the beasts admire his learning, and give credit to everything he said.
At last, the fox, who was present, with indignation asked him how he could have the impudence, with those thin lantern jaws, that meagre, pale phiz, and plotched spotted body, to set up for one who was able to cure the infirmities of others? [more info]

37. THE QUACK FROG.
A Frog once made a proclamation
To all the creatures in creation
That, having taken the degree
Doctor of Medicine (M. D.),
It gave him pleasure to assure
The World that he could quickly cure,
By means of a prescription rare,
All ills to which the flesh is heir.
"Then," said the Fox, "my learned friend,
Since to heal others you pretend,
Why is it that you don't begin
On your lame gait and wrinkled skin?" [more info]
